Local Beaches : include Playas Grande, Playa Ventanas and Playa Carbón have great surf, sand, sun, shells and snorkeling. Consistent swells make Playa Grande a good surf spot year round. Swimming, boogie boarding, beach walking and sunbathing are other principal beach activities, but snorkeling is also popular at Playa Carbón. During nesting season, turtle watching is the main nightlife activity.

Sports: Surfing is the most popular and prevalent sport in Playa Grande. Surf shops and instructors abound, making it a perfect place to escape to the waves or to learn. Swells alternate between highs and lows, and make this shore a challenge for all skill levels. Those not quite ready to brave a surf board may be enticed with a boogie board; a short, light weight, foam board that you lie on. Paddle out, catch a wave and a good ride on a boogie board will wash you ashore.

Adventures: Tour companies offer many excursions departing from Playa Grande, including the turtle-watching treks and estuary tours. Horseback riding, sailing and snorkeling are also popular.

Playa Grande is a surf town known for its consistent swells, an ecotourism destination known for its array of wildlife and a vacation and retirement community known for its tranquility and seclusion. Surfers, environmentalists and expats, not mutually exclusive categories, all coexist in this natural retreat.

Surf shops and instructors abound for surfers at any level who need equipment or want to improve their skills. For those seeking a less strenuous and more relaxing vacation, Playa Grande offers spa services, bicycle and scooter rentals, estuary tours and sunset sailing. Meandering along the beach and the monkey trail looking for wildlife is also popular.

Playa Grande’s beachfront is a protected habitat as part of the Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas. As such, the houses and businesses in town are set inland from the beach, noise and light restrictions are enforced and littering and collecting shells are prohibited.

While surfers, swimmers and sun-worshippers populate the beach by day, it is off-limits to visitors at night from November through February when the endangered leatherback turtles come to nest. From dawn to dusk during nesting season, only those with a registered guide may walk the beach wearing dark clothing and without lights to catch a glimpse of the turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs.

Located just across the estuary from the buzzing and brightly lit Tamarindo, Playa Grande encourages a much more tranquillo lifestyle. Its reputation for great waves also means this town runs on a surf schedule – early to bed and early to rise.

The largest surf point is in Playa Grande Estates, the more commercial and dispersed of Playa Grande’s two constituent neighborhoods. Surfers usually elect to stay on this side of town, as it is home to the hollow lefts and rights immortalized in the surf classic Endless Summer II.

Palm Beach Estates, much like its Floridian counterpart, is a vacation and retirement destination, comprising second homes, boutique hotels and cabinas. It is a model of sustainable, low-impact development in Costa Rica.

The neighborhoods are easily walkable and bikable, and the community is small and friendly enough that it’s common courtesy to greet everyone you pass with a cheerful hola. From the Liberia Airport... it's about a 1 hour drive. You can either rent a car at the airport, or take a taxi. A taxi should cost you ~$60, unless you book a taxi in advance. We recommend the Tamarindo Shuttle. They can be reached at 011-39-334-5494 or at their website TamarindoShuttle.com. Tamarindo Shuttle should cost only $25 per person.

From Liberia Airport:

Leave Liberia Airport and turn right onto Route 21

Drive ~30 km on Route 21 to Belen.

In Belen, turn right @ Gas Station onto 155 towards Huacas. You will see signs for Tamarindo, Plya Conchal, Flamingo & Playa Grande.

Drive ~26 km on Route 155 to Huacas

Turn left in Santa Ana when the road 'T's at the Soda Shop

You will go over a little mountain just before Huacas, and will enter Huacas as you come down the other side. Bear Right in Huacas, follow signs to Playa Grande & Flamingo

Drive ~4 km to Matapalo

You will pass the turnoff for Flamingo at ~1 km. Enter Matapalo, pass the soccer field, turn left at the stop sign.

Drive ~ 5.5 km to Playa Grande

Just keep going straight. As you enter Playa Grande you will pass Pura Vida Realty & Playa Grande Surf Shop on the right, and Kike's Place on the left.

The critically endangered leatherback is the largest living turtle in the world, and as the last surviving member of its family, the leatherback turtle has several distinguishing characteristics that differentiate it from other sea turtles. It is the only sea turtle that lacks a hard shell. Instead, the carapace of the leatherback is covered by oily flesh and its namesake thick leathery skin.

Adult leatherbacks average 3 to 6 feet long and weigh 500 to 1500 pounds. The largest specimen on record was 10 feet long, 8 feet wide and weighed almost 2,000 pounds. These unique creatures are capable of diving to depths of 5,000 feet and swimming at speeds of 20 mph. A leatherback equipped with transmitter backpack journeyed over 12,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean in 647 days, the longest recorded migration of any sea vertebrate. Unfortunately, satellite evidence suggests that it subsequently may have been captured at sea and brought aboard a vessel, a plight which continues to contribute to the decimation of the leatherback turtle population.

Leatherbacks are the longest-living marine species to ever ply the world's oceans. They have survived catastrophic asteroid impacts, outlived dinosaurs and witnessed the rise of humanity... but they are now on the brink of extinction, and scientists question whether they will survive the next decade. The population of leatherbacks may have declined by as much as 95 percent in the past two decades, and they have disappeared completely from many historically important nesting areas.

In the 1970s and 1980s, organized egg harvesting practically eliminated the viability of any leatherback nests producing turtle hatchlings in Costa Rica. Eggs were drank by locals with shots of alcohol, sold to commercial bakeries, and later exported to Asia as a delicasy. The early conservation efforts of Louis Wilson, owner of Hotel Las Tortugas, initially raised the awareness of the Costa Rican government. And in an effort to finally end poaching, scientists Dr. Frank Paladino of Indiana-Purdue University and Dr. James Spotila of Drexel University initiated the Las Baulas Conservation Project in 1988. The Las Baulas National Park (Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas) was created by the government of Costa Rica in response to the resultant data on declines in leatherback populations in Playa Grande.

Las Baulas National Park, which is comprised of Playa Grande, Playa Ventanas and Playa Langosta, is one of the world's few remaining sites of significant leatherback turtle nesting activity and is critical to the survival of the Pacific leatherback turtle. Playa Grande supports the largest nesting colony of leatherback turtles in the Pacific Ocean. Close to 1,400 female leatherbacks nested at Playa Grande in 1990. By 2000 the number of females at Playa Grande were reduced to a few hundred, and last year and this year we have had less than 100 females come ashore. Individual female leatherbacks nest several times during the October-to-February nesting season, and lay clutches of 80-100 eggs per nest. Hatchlings emerge 60-65 days later. Today, park guards and conservationists work in concert to protect and monitor the activitiy of leatherback turtles in the park. Although poaching has subsided in Playa Grande, sea turtles in the Pacific and elsewhere continue to face an unsustainable rate of adult mortality as a result of commercial fishing techniques using gill nets and longlines. A 2003 study tracking tagged sea turtles by satellite estimated that up to one in three turtles are unintentionally killed at the hands of fishermen each year. Another study suggested that longline and gill net fisheries killed as many as 1,500 leatherbacks each year in the Pacific during the 1990s. Additionally, the harvesting of sea turtle eggs is still practiced elsewhere in the world, and in particular Asia where the turtle is pratically locally extinct in Malaysia and Thailand.

If you are visiting Playa Grande during the October-to-February nesting season, don't miss the opportunity to see this amazing creature as it comes ashore to nest as it has been for over 100 million years. Visit the office of Las Baulas National Park to sign up for a guided tour. And PLEASE stay off the beaches from dusk to dawn. During the daylight hours, be aware as you walk to avoid stepping on newly nested clutches or marked nests. Remember... this is nature, nests are usually above the high tide line, but can be anywhere and are often unmarked or simply marked with a stick.

Imagine clear blue skies for the majority of the year. Offshore winds and clear aquamarine water. Add consistant swells to this equation, and you have the makings of a true surfer's paradise.

Playa Grande is a fantastic sandy-bottomed beach break with good lefts and rights. Between November and April, the wind blows offshore for the majority most of the day, gracing Playa Grande with its fair share of hollow, barrelling waves. The swell is generally smallest late November / Dec/ Jan/ Febthrough February, however there is almost always something to surfon. At this time, there is a greater chance of north swells, however the predominent swell direction year round is the southswell. The rainy season (June, July, August) brings larger swells on average, however the wind is less consistently off-shore.

The 3 hours before, and up to 3 hours after high tide are the optimal times to surf. Low tide could present you with a picture that makes you feel like you landed in the wrong place! Don't despair, just make sure you plan to be there at the right time. Morning sessions, year round, generally yield glassier conditions, especially between May and November when you can't rely on the off-shore winds to blow all day long.

Being such a long beach, there are plenty of options. The most popular surfing spot is in front of Hotel Las Tortugas, Taco Star and the public parking access. Generally the waves break bigger and more consistently here, and it is consequently very crowded. A short walk north or south of this main peak reveals more breaks with less crowds, so if you are not a fan of surfing with a hundred of your best friends, take a stroll and find a spot to yourself.

The further south you walk on the beach (in the direction of Tamarindo), the waves generally become smaller, so if you are a beginner or not super-confident, head south. Beginner surfers would do well to take a drive south, to Palm Beach Estates and have some fun where the waves are generally smaller. Not only will you feel less intimidated by the waves, you will be safer out of the way of the more aggressive surfers up by the main peak.

Playa Grande Estates boasts surf shops, hotels, restaurants and paved roads. The MINAE office, which regulates and patrols the Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas, is also located here.

Playa Grande Estates is home to two of the big surf breaks in Playa Grande, each being public beach access points. It is also en route to Playa Ventanas and Playa Carbón.

The crowd in Playa Grande Estates tends to be younger and heavily focused on surfing, which makes for a pretty quiet night scene. Nightlife tends to prevail when the surf is not good or to revolve around surf-related activities, like the screening of a new surf movie.

Palm Beach Estates is a modern development set inland from the public beaches protected as part of the Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas. It is home to many retirees and vacationers looking to drop off the map, and live their surf or beach escape dreams.
