¡Hola Todos! I'm headed to Costa Rica this summer – aka arriving tomorrow and staying for nearly two months – and am DYING to try my hand at surfing while I am there! I mean, really, could there be a better place to learn?! I've never so much as held a surfboard in my life but am not about to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to test the waters, so I'll need as much help as I can get! Any ideas as far as surf schools, rentals or instructors? Any tips for me as I get started? Any great surf spots for beginners? Any way to reclaim my dignity as I make a fool of myself getting pounded by the waves? Let me know. I would LOVE any and all advice you have to offer. Thanks!

hi hannah,

Firts of all welcome to playa grande, costa rica. You will have a great time in one of the most beautiful beach in the country.

Talking about surfing lessons you can ask for surfing lessons at MATOS SURF SHOP in Playa Grande store or Tamarindo. They are serious and responsable people.

have a nice trip, pura vida!!!!!!

Hannah there are a number of surf schools. depending on where you will be staying will be the determination of what school to recommend.

I have been surfing for nearly 50 years and know most of the schools nearby Tamarindo, and Playa Grande. If you will be near this area I will be happy to help you find the right school and help in the noble quest to learn how to surf! I have found that once you have a little success you will be ruined for life. Surfing will take over your life and dominate your decisions on where to live, who to hang out with, and your life will be ruled by surf swell direction and the tide. Not a bad life at all!

Thank you so much for the info Martin & Tom! I will be staying in Playa Grande, so any recommendations of places nearby would be great. I hear that there's a couple calmer spots along the beach away from the crowds that might be good to try out? Having surfing dictate my life plans doesn't sound so bad. Follow the tide, the sun and the beach? Can you say heaven?! It's the gaining the little bit of success that has me a bit worried. Any tips for beginners? Any thing I should be packing or picking up once I get there that might make the learning a little easier?
